Eight of Wands

Eight rays of light, like arrows or lightning, form a crystalline lattice, with a rainbow above. The fire has become pure motion.

Hod, Splendour, in Atziluth, the world of emanation. Splendour, the sphere of Mercury: intellect, language, science, form without force. Hod is the mirror of Netzach on the other pillar. The Eights are Hod in the four worlds and show the element organised, sometimes overorganised, by mind.

Hod in the world of Fire: the element organised by mind, energy turned to light. Mercury in the first decan of Sagittarius makes the arrow into a message.

Mercury in the first decan of Sagittarius (0°–10°, about Nov 23–Dec 2). Mercury is the messenger: mind, speech, writing, trade, sleight of hand, the go-between. On the Tree it is Hod, Splendour; among the trumps it is the Magus, and the Magus's ape is the lie that language makes possible.

Sagittarius is mutable Fire: the archer, the arrow of aspiration, the long view. Jupiter rules it. Its trump is Art. The trump of Sagittarius is Art.

This decan is ruled by the Knight of Wands, whose arc runs from 21° Scorpio to 20° Sagittarius. The two Shem angels of the decan are Vehuel and Daniel.

Thought: intellect, analysis, the mind organising what feeling has produced. Hod, Splendour. The Eights show the element ordered by mind; Adjustment is trump VIII.

Intuition as sudden insight, the flash that arrives whole. The Wands are usually read as the intuition function in Jung's typology, an interpretive convention rather than a text of Jung's.

Rider-Waite calls the suit Wands, Rods or Staves. Its small cards carry scenes; the Thoth small cards carry the suit emblems arranged geometrically, with the keyword printed at the bottom and the colours of their Sephirah and decan. The Golden Dawn title (Lord of Swiftness) is shared by both traditions.
