Eight of Disks

A tree bears eight disks as flowers and fruit in a well-tended field; the sky is calm and the growth is ordered.

Hod, Splendour, in Assiah, the world of action. Splendour, the sphere of Mercury: intellect, language, science, form without force. Hod is the mirror of Netzach on the other pillar. The Eights are Hod in the four worlds and show the element organised, sometimes overorganised, by mind.

Hod in the world of Earth: matter organised by mind, cultivated. The Sun in the first decan of Virgo lights the harvest sign.

The Sun in the first decan of Virgo (0°–10°, about Aug 23–Sep 1). The Sun is the centre, the heart, vitality, identity and the light by which everything else is seen. On the Tree it is Tiphareth; among the trumps it is the Sun, the two children dancing in the light of the New Aeon.

Virgo is mutable Earth: the virgin and the harvest, discrimination, the seed and the wheat. Mercury both rules and is exalted here. Its trump is the Hermit. The trump of Virgo is The Hermit.

This decan is ruled by the Knight of Disks, whose arc runs from 21° Leo to 20° Virgo. The two Shem angels of the decan are Lecabel and Vasariah.

Thought: intellect, analysis, the mind organising what feeling has produced. Hod, Splendour. The Eights show the element ordered by mind; Adjustment is trump VIII.

Sensation refined into skill; the material world understood in detail. The Disks are usually read as the sensation function in Jung's typology, an interpretive convention rather than a text of Jung's.

Rider-Waite calls the suit Pentacles or Coins. Its small cards carry scenes; the Thoth small cards carry the suit emblems arranged geometrically, with the keyword printed at the bottom and the colours of their Sephirah and decan. The Golden Dawn title (Lord of Prudence) is shared by both traditions.
