Eight of Cups

Eight cups stand on a stagnant pool under a dull sky; the lotus flow has thinned to a trickle and some of the cups are broken.

Hod, Splendour, in Briah, the world of creation. Splendour, the sphere of Mercury: intellect, language, science, form without force. Hod is the mirror of Netzach on the other pillar. The Eights are Hod in the four worlds and show the element organised, sometimes overorganised, by mind.

Hod in the world of Water: feeling organised by mind, which drains it. Saturn in the first decan of Pisces weighs on the waters and stops their flow.

Saturn in the first decan of Pisces (0°–10°, about Feb 19–28). Saturn is time, limit, structure, old age and the boundary of the known. On the Tree it is Binah; among the trumps it is the Universe, where Saturn and Earth together seal the work.

Pisces is mutable Water: the two fish, the end of the zodiac, dissolution and the waters before the spring. Jupiter rules it traditionally (Neptune in modern practice) and Venus is exalted here. Its trump is the Moon. The trump of Pisces is The Moon.

This decan is ruled by the Knight of Cups, whose arc runs from 21° Aquarius to 20° Pisces. The two Shem angels of the decan are Eyael and Habuhiah.

Thought: intellect, analysis, the mind organising what feeling has produced. Hod, Splendour. The Eights show the element ordered by mind; Adjustment is trump VIII.

Feeling exhausted by analysis; the value known but no longer felt. The Cups are usually read as the feeling function in Jung's typology, an interpretive convention rather than a text of Jung's.

Rider-Waite calls the suit Cups (also Chalices). Its small cards carry scenes; the Thoth small cards carry the suit emblems arranged geometrically, with the keyword printed at the bottom and the colours of their Sephirah and decan. The Golden Dawn title (Lord of Abandoned Success) is shared by both traditions.
