In a reading
Cruelty, malice, oppression, tyranny; force used blindly and without regard to its object; a burden carried too long. Badly placed: revenge, injustice, the oppressor oppressed.
On the card
Two great dorjes cross over eight wands set in a rigid grid; the flames have become a prison. The fire has crystallised into a bar.
Kabbalah
Malkuth, Kingdom, in Atziluth, the world of emanation. The Kingdom, the tenth Sephirah, the world as it actually is: matter, the body, the finished thing that has fallen away from its source and yet contains it. Malkuth is the Daughter, the final Heh. The Tens are Malkuth in the four worlds and show the element carried to its end, for good or ill; the Princesses belong here.
Malkuth in the world of Fire: the element carried to its extreme and fixed in matter, where it can only crush. Saturn in the last decan of Sagittarius turns the aspiration into a weight.
Astrology
Saturn in the third decan of Sagittarius (20°–30°, about Dec 13–21). Saturn is time, limit, structure, old age and the boundary of the known. On the Tree it is Binah; among the trumps it is the Universe, where Saturn and Earth together seal the work.
Sagittarius is mutable Fire: the archer, the arrow of aspiration, the long view. Jupiter rules it. Its trump is Art. The trump of Sagittarius is Art.
This decan is ruled by the Queen of Disks, whose arc runs from 21° Sagittarius to 20° Capricorn. The two Shem angels of the decan are Nanael and Nithael.
Number
The crystallised Actual: the cycle complete, matter as it is known, the end that contains the next beginning. Malkuth, the Kingdom. The Tens carry each element to its extreme; Fortune is trump X.
Depth psychology
Intuition hardened into ideology; the vision that now only demands. The Wands are usually read as the intuition function in Jung's typology, an interpretive convention rather than a text of Jung's.
Thoth and Rider-Waite
Rider-Waite calls the suit Wands, Rods or Staves. Its small cards carry scenes; the Thoth small cards carry the suit emblems arranged geometrically, with the keyword printed at the bottom and the colours of their Sephirah and decan. The Golden Dawn title (Lord of Oppression) is shared by both traditions.
