In a reading
Harmonious change, the alternation of gain and loss, weakness and strength; a pleasant change of circumstances. Badly placed: restlessness, change for its own sake.
On the card
A crowned serpent coils into a figure of eight, and within each loop turns a disk marked with the yin-yang; the whole is in motion.
Kabbalah
Chokmah, Wisdom, in Assiah, the world of action. Wisdom, the Supernal Father, the first movement out of the point: a line, a direction, the Yod of the Name. The Twos are Chokmah in each of the four worlds, the element at its purest and most dynamic, and the Knights belong here as the fiery fathers of their suits.
Chokmah in the world of Earth: the element at its purest, matter as motion and exchange. Jupiter in the first decan of Capricorn brings expansion to the sign of structure.
Astrology
Jupiter in the first decan of Capricorn (0°–10°, about Dec 22–30). Jupiter is expansion, generosity, luck, law and the king's mercy. On the Tree it is Chesed; among the trumps it is Fortune, the wheel that turns by its own law.
Capricorn is cardinal Earth: the goat that climbs, the winter solstice from which the light returns, ambition and structure. Saturn rules it and Mars is exalted here. Its trump is the Devil. The trump of Capricorn is The Devil.
This decan is ruled by the Queen of Disks, whose arc runs from 21° Sagittarius to 20° Capricorn. The two Shem angels of the decan are Mebahiah and Poyel.
Number
The Line: the first extension, direction, the reflecting Other. Chokmah, Wisdom. The Twos show each element at its purest and most dynamic; the Priestess is trump II.
Depth psychology
Sensation as flux: the discovery that what is solid also moves. The Disks are usually read as the sensation function in Jung's typology, an interpretive convention rather than a text of Jung's.
Thoth and Rider-Waite
Rider-Waite calls the suit Pentacles or Coins. Its small cards carry scenes; the Thoth small cards carry the suit emblems arranged geometrically, with the keyword printed at the bottom and the colours of their Sephirah and decan. The Golden Dawn title (Lord of Harmonious Change) is shared by both traditions.
