Small card, Binah in Briah

Three of Cups

Abundance

Lord of Abundance

☿︎ ♋︎

In a reading

Abundance, plenty, hospitality, kindness, love that is fruitful; celebration. Badly placed: pleasure that ends, sensuality, a fullness that will not last.

On the card

Three cups shaped like pomegranates stand on lotus stems and overflow into one another; the sea beneath them is calm and full.

Kabbalah

Binah, Understanding, in Briah, the world of creation. Understanding, the Supernal Mother, the great sea in which the Father's line becomes a triangle and so a form. Binah is Saturn, time and limitation, and also sorrow, because to be understood is to be bounded. The Threes are Binah in the four worlds, and the Queens belong here.

Binah in the world of Water: feeling given form, the mother's cup. Mercury in the second decan of Cancer brings articulation and exchange to the abundance.

Astrology

Mercury in the second decan of Cancer (10°–20°, about Jul 2–11). Mercury is the messenger: mind, speech, writing, trade, sleight of hand, the go-between. On the Tree it is Hod, Splendour; among the trumps it is the Magus, and the Magus's ape is the lie that language makes possible.

Cancer is cardinal Water: the crab and its shell, the home, the first flood of summer at the solstice. The Moon rules it and Jupiter is exalted here. Its trump is the Chariot. The trump of Cancer is The Chariot.

This decan is ruled by the Queen of Cups, whose arc runs from 21° Gemini to 20° Cancer. The two Shem angels of the decan are Nelchael and Yeiayel.

Number

The Plane: three points enclose a surface and form begins. Binah, Understanding. The Threes show the element taking shape; the Empress is trump III.

Depth psychology

Feeling shared and spoken; the value made communal. The Cups are usually read as the feeling function in Jung's typology, an interpretive convention rather than a text of Jung's.

Thoth and Rider-Waite

Rider-Waite calls the suit Cups (also Chalices). Its small cards carry scenes; the Thoth small cards carry the suit emblems arranged geometrically, with the keyword printed at the bottom and the colours of their Sephirah and decan. The Golden Dawn title (Lord of Abundance) is shared by both traditions.
